.............................................................................DON LEE VAN WINKLE
Fallin' Idol stands out
for simply being what was once called rock and
roll.
The heart in this music cannot be denied. It is more than evident
in
the opening title track, where the listener can hear instantly
from not
only the sound, but the feel of Winkle's voice that he has lived
what he
is singing about. And that feel is present on every track of this
album
whether the rocking, angry (yet funny) "Who Do You Think
I Am," the
gentle "I'm A Fool," the country good-timey "The
Gate Is Open," or the
tough and funky "Trouble Begins" and "Jones Is
In The Mail."
To say that Don Lee Van Winkle is a mainstay of the Philadelphia
music
scene is an understatement. Winkle (as he is generally known)
was in
the Philly band American Dream, whose produced-by-Todd Rundgren
album
hit the Billboard Chart in its first week of release.
Fallin' Idol was produced and engineered by drummer, Daoud
Shaw, owner
of Radio Active Productions. Shaw's credentials include playing
drums
for Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia, Etta James and the Saturday Night
Live Band as well as co-producing and engineering some of Morrison's
best albums.
Review: "Veteran Philly guitar slinger Don LeeVan
Winkle brings a jaundiced eye and knowing way to scenarios of
big-city living and dying scored in heartland rock, blues, shuffle
and country music veins.........The title track is a musically
catchy but cold-blooded tale of an honored Vietnam vet with adark
side......It holds up favorably to like minded works by Bruce
Springsteen and Lou Reed.........cool groove tune "Dancin'at
Delilah's" turns into the Craig Rabinowitz story...Another
fave--the coded, intriguing 'Jones Is in the Mail'" JonathanTakiff-Philadelphia
